WHAT IS THE LAW?
The Reporting of Injuries Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1997 (S.R. 1997 No.455), known as RIDDOR (NI) 1997.
Failure to comply with these Regulations is a criminal offence.


WHY REPORT ACCIDENTS?
Reporting accidents to the appropriate enforcing authorities (HSENI/District Councils) allows them and us to identify accident trends and take action where needed.


WHAT ARE MY DUTIES?
If you are an employer or self-employed, or are in control of work premises, you have duties under the Regulations.

STEP 1 You must notify the appropriate authority immediately -

  • if anybody dies or is seriously injured in an accident in connection with your business
  • if there is a dangerous occurance
    (such as an overturned crane or a burst pressure valve)
    Notification would normally be by phone

STEP 2 You must report in writing to the appropriate authority within ten days, -

  • if anybody is off work for more than three days as a result of an accident at work.
  • if you have had to notify any death, major injury or dangerous occurrence.
  • if a specified occupational disease is certified by a doctor The Employment Medical Advisory Service (see appendix) is available to answer questions on the reporting of diseases.

You must keep a record of any injury, dangerous occurrence or case of disease required to be reported.

Form NI 2508 - for reporting injuries and dangerous occurrences.
Form NI 2508A for reporting cases of disease.

WHO DO I NOTIFY?
WHERE DO I SEND THE REPORT?

In general if your premises are:

  • an office
  • a shop
  • a warehouse
  • residential accommodation

the appropriate authority will be your district council Environmental Health Department

For most other premises, e.g. industrial commercial and agricultural the appropriate authority will be the Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland.
